CROSS-BORDER STUDY GUIDE

Study Abroad as a US Citizen

Explore university entry and study permission considerations when applying from United States to another country.

Qualifications and admission

Common qualifications: US high school diploma, Advanced Placement (AP), IB and university degrees.

For UK undergraduate courses, universities may ask for AP subjects and grades alongside a US high school diploma. Standardised test policies vary. For Canada, Ireland and Australia, check each institution's US-specific entry requirements.

Immigration and residence

US citizens generally need a UK Student visa for qualifying long-term study unless they have another valid immigration status. An offer of admission does not itself grant permission to study.

Tuition fees and funding

Fee status can depend on nationality, residence history, immigration status and institution rules. Do not assume domestic fees because you hold a passport from the destination region.

English language evidence

Even applicants educated in English should check the university's evidence rules and any separate immigration conditions. Exemptions are not always automatic.

Before you apply

Choose a programme, confirm entry requirements for your qualification, check fees and scholarships, prepare documents, and verify student visa or residence rules with the destination government's official website. Your personal residence history can affect eligibility.
